Apparently girlfriend getaways are becoming more than just a few gals heading to the next city for a weekend away together.

According to research from Asian travel company Agoda, groups of women from the US, Canada, Australia and Europe are flooding in to Asian destinations like Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. They say that the number of bookings made by women in the last year has increased by 70%, a huge leap in that short time.

The appeal of these Asian destinations for a girlfriend getaway is obvious: sunshine, beaches, shopping, massage and spas. Many hotel chains and tourist boards have already recognized the growth in women’s group travel and they’re marketing accordingly, with special spa packages or discounts and incentives for shopping trips.

Thailand seems to have caught on to the market the quickest, and a number of big name hotels including the Marriott, Hilton and Peninsula Hotels in Bangkok offer special women-only packages which include a shop and a trip to the spa as well as some group sightseeing tours to temples and river cruises, all with just the gals of course.

And other hotels are being especially friendly to girlfriend trips. For example, the Fleming Hotel in Hong Kong has created a women-only floor called “Her Space”, similar to the ladies-only area of the Alila Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia.
