Go directly to jail: Fremantle, Australia
If you’re traveling with a group there are a couple of advantages of taking them on an outing to a jail. Not only will most of them find it a fascinating experience, but you can also make plenty of (bad) jokes about how you’ll leave the troublemaker of the group there!
In Perth, Australia, a particularly interesting group excursion is to visit the Fremantle Prison in the port area. For an Australian building, it’s old and historic, built some over 150 years ago by convicts who had arrived from Britain. It was used in various forms as a jail until 1991, when it was finally closed, and then reopened as a historic site.
These days, you can easily arrange group tours directly with the prison. For a minimum group size of 10, the staff will arrange a discount rate and a personal guide. The guided tour will take your group through the cell blocks, the exercise yards, and even to the gallows which were used until capital punishment was outlawed in 1984. Groups will also be interested to see the large prison chapel and the kitchens where the trusted prisoners worked. Most impressive is the display of cells over the decades, where you can see exactly how little space a prisoner had.
