Germany’s “Castle Road” stretches 585 miles across southern Germany and the Czech Republic, from Mannheim, Germany to Prague. Along the way, there are 70 castles and a variety of Medieval cities and fortresses to explore.
Along the Castle Road
This time of year is especially lovely as the leaves turn and the fall and early winter late afternoon sunlight makes patterns on the ancient stone structures. Among the highlights of the Castle Road are:
- Mannheim Castle - Built in 1606, this large, Baroque-style castle is now the main building of the University of Manheim.
- Heidelberg Castle - This 13th century, partially restored, castle sits overlooking town of Heidelberg, offering spectacular views and plenty of history to relive.
- Bad Wimpfen - This spa town along the banks of the Neckar River is home to the “Blauen Turm” (the Blue Tower), a fairytale-like, square, Medieval tower.
- Rothenburg - This Bavarian town is one of several cities in Germany with this name. The Bavarian Rothenburg is known as a well-preserved example of a walled Medieval city, with a picturesque town square, a clock tower and two circles of ancient city walls.
