Shuffling your snow boots around Lapland sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? But Finland has become a bit of a tourist magnet in the last few years, and the Finns are well set up to cater for groups and keep them active. Add to that Finnair’s ever-expanding flights and it’s becoming a realistic target.

If you ask me, you have to set your trip dates for winter, and wherever possible, just before Christmas. When families are involved with the trip too, then why not include Christmas itself - nothing could be more memorable than a 100% guaranteed white Christmas. A couple of years ago, I spent the Christmas and New Year break in Finnish Lapland and daydream about the white landscape and ultimate Christmas feeling every holiday season.

There aren’t too many major towns in northern Finland, and the best base for a group stay is Rovaniemi, just a few miles shy of the Arctic Circle. With several major hotels and plenty of adventure activity tour outfits, the infrastructure is definitely there to take care of you and your group.

Apart from meeting Santa Claus at his special village on the Arctic Circle (and yes, even adults seem to love doing this), there are numerous activities to choose from. If you visit in winter, then day and half-day trips like ice-fishing, reindeer sleigh driving, snowshoe walking and snow mobile safaris are on the list. Daylight hours are short, but that just means the nightlife can start earlier.
