Checkpoint Charlie

One of the most famous reminders of the Berlin Wall is the border crossing known as Checkpoint Charlie. It doesn’t exist any more, of course, but the Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie located near the original site of the crossing is a great place to learn about what went on in Berlin during those difficult times. There were other checkpoints along the border between East and West Germany, but Checkpoint Charlie’s location at the Berlin Wall made it a symbol for the Cold War. The border between east and west was closed in 1961. Checkpoint Charlie was dismantled almost 30 years later in June 1990.

The museum features exhibits about the building and tearing down of the wall, the history and politics surrounding it and the stories of the people who attempted to cross over the wall to West Berlin. There are fascinating stories about successful people-smuggling attempts, as well as sad tales of people who didn’t survive.

Group visitors receive a big discount on the entry price: For a group of 10 or more, the cost of entry drops from the usual €9.50 to just €5.50 per person. It’s not necessary to book in advance. You can find the museum on Friedrichstrasse in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin. You can get there by taking either the Kochstrasse or Stadtmitte underground train stations. Or get there on foot with a short stroll from Brandenburg Gate or the parliament building.
