Free things to do in Madrid
Madrid, the capital of Spain, is located in the hilly, central region of the country. Spain, generally, is more affordable than many European capitals. The large number of free attractions and events also help to keep down the cost of visiting this historic city.
Evenings at the Prado Museum: One of the most important museums in Europe, the Prado is home to dozens of canvases by El Greco, Goya and Velazquez, among other Spanish painters. The museum is free to all Tuesday through Saturday from 6pm to 8pm and on Sunday from 5 pm to 8 pm.
The Bullfight Museum: Madrid’s Bullfight Museum chronicles the national sport with photos, matador’s costumes and other bullfighting artifacts. The museum is free every day.
Retiro Park: Located in central Madrid near the Prado, this former royal park is home to a crystal palace conservatory, a lake, a bandstand, multiple landscaped flower beds and a full schedule of festivals and events. There’s always something to see in this peaceful city park.
The Plaza Mayor: Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, located in the heart of the city, has been the center of Madrid life since the 16th Century. It was the site of Inquisition trials, bullfights and political proclamations. Today, the gracious townhouses that frame the square belie this turbulent history and make a relaxing place for a stroll. In December, the square is filled with holiday craft vendors.
