Rio de Janeiro. Even the name drums up images of the exotic, and a vacation to this location is sure to be that. But it’s not the crazy South American party place that you might be imagining; or at least it doesn’t have to be. Sure, if you want to spend your Rio vacation partying it up, you can. But Rio is a terrific group travel destination for people of all ages and interests.

Located in Brazil, this city became famous around the world as a party destination because of the “Carnaval” celebrations that it enjoys. This is the South American version of the Mardi Gras and if you go to Rio during this time, you’re sure to run in to the party. Groups that are made up of young people looking for some wild times will find this time of year (spring) to be the best time to visit Rio de Janeiro together. There are often Spring break specials for young adult groups around this time of year.

But if you’ve got a group that’s looking for more than just the party, you can go to Rio de Janeiro at any other time during the year and find plenty to suit your style. The beaches of Rio are particularly beautiful. During the summer months (remember this means December through March because Rio is in the Southern hemisphere) these beaches can help you cool off from the Brazilian heat. During the winter months, they’re a great place for getting some sunshine and enjoying the beach views.

Most groups that travel to Rio make it a point to check out the rainforest which is located nearby. People of all ages and backgrounds are impressed with the natural beauty of the jungle that surrounds Rio’s urban life. Parque Nacional de Tijuca is the national park that you want to look for if this is on your agenda. You should also consider hiking to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain where you will not only see more beautiful nature but will also get a 360 degree view of Rio.

But you’ll want to stick with the urban environments for accommodations. The lodging in the Copacabana area will provide you with some of the amenities that you’ll want and will give you exposure to the urban culture of the area. Look for a large hotel or book a hostel in advance to make sure that your entire group will be accommodated. Both the urban areas and the more rural areas will provide your group with a chance to do some shopping. You should be sure to schedule a day for this into your itinerary, as there are numerous interesting crafts that can be picked up inexpensively in Rio. This gives you something to take home for souvenirs but it also gives you the experience of South American shopping and lets you interact with the people who live and work in Rio.

You should be aware that Rio de Janeiro is a safe travel destination. However, there are always some risks when traveling to a foreign country. Rio has been known to have gang crime as well as problems with pickpocketing. Protect your group by sticking together, staying alert and keeping abreast of the local news while you are there. If you take some basic precautions, you’ll be safe during your stay – and you’ll get to experience all of the pleasures that Rio has to offer.
