Chicago’s Magnificent Mile shopping district, festive and snowy atmosphere, and friendly people make it an ideal place to visit for the holidays. The “Windy City” also hosts a number of annual events to celebrate the season.

Winter Wonder Fest: This annual event, held on Chicago’s Navy Pier, features a host of activities that includes ice skating, visits with Santa, cookie making, inflatables for kids to jump on, and the reindeer express train. Admission varies between $15 - $18. Winter Wonder Fest runs from December 7 to January 6. Hours are Sunday through Thursday, 10am - 8pm, and Friday and Saturday from 10am to 10pm.

Christkindlmarket: Each December, Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago turns itself into a traditional German Christmas market, with vendors selling ornaments, holiday decorations and gifts. The market (pictured above) runs through December 24 and admission in free. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 8pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am to 9pm.

Zoo Lights: Each year, Lincoln Park Zoo, just north of downtown, adorns its grounds with thousands of lights. In addition, the event features animal displays, family crafts, and Santa and his helpers. What’s more: admission is free. The exhibit runs through January 1. Hours through December 9 are Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm to 9pm. From December 14 through 31, the exhibit is open from 5pm - 9pm daily (except for Christmas Day).
