acadia national park
Maine’s Acadia National Park was the first national park east of the Mississippi. Established in 1916, the 47,000+-acre park encompasses all of Mount Desert Island and some of the mainland, just outside of Bar Harbor. The topography ranges from mountains, to meadow, to white sand beaches. It’s beautiful any time of year, but the park sparkles in the fall when the leaves change to red, yellow, and orange.

Visiting Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is accessible by car and a short drive from Bar Harbor. The park is also about six hours by car from Boston and ten hours from New York City.

Facilities at the Park
Facilities at Acadia National Park include over 50 miles of carriage trails donated in the 1930s by financier John D. Rockefeller Jr. as well as 17 granite bridges and 2 gate lodges from that era. In addition, the park has two visitors’ centers, two museums, historic Bar Harbor Head Lighthouse, and a campground.

Hours and Admission
Acadia National Park is open year-round, although the visitors’ centers are closed from the end of October until April 15. Daily admission is $5 per person from May 1 to October 31. Weekly and monthly passes are also available. Additional fees are charged for the campground. Most ranger-led programs within the park are free.
