Between the Black Hills and the Badlands, South Dakota offers travelers unparalleled views and a variety of outdoor activities. But, wait, there’s more.
History buffs can follow the path Lewis & Clark followed in their search for a northwest passage. Amateur archaeologists might be interested in spending time on a dig, South Dakota was where “Sue,” the famous T-Rex now sitting in the Chicago Field Museum, was unearthed in South Dakota. And then there’s one of the nation’s most well known landmarks, Mount Rushmore National Monument.
For nearly 70 years, motorcycle enthusiasts have been making the pilgrimage to the state for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally that occurs every August.
If you choose to drive to South Dakota (as I’ve done many times during my childhood) you and your family will no doubt by amused by the constant signs along the interstate that advertise the Wall Drug Store, located on the edge of the Badlands. The business was founded during the Great Depression, and the owners lured customers to their store with the promise of free ice water, which was very appealing to people in an era with no air conditioning, 7-11, or Starbucks. Today, Wall Drug still offers free iced water and a plethora of other attractions to entertain your group.
If you and your gang are looking for some more rowdy fun, visit the historic town of Deadwood where Wild Bill Hickock met his end. This ghost town has been restored to look as it did in the late 1800s, when outlaws dominated the turf, and gambling has also been legalized.
