View from Coit Tower

The “City by the Bay” has a number of appealing aspects. The weather is temperate; the culture diverse; and the food always enjoyable. San Francisco also offers a wide range of free activities. Here are a few:

Coit Tower - This 210-foot tower built in 1933 was funded by socialite Lillie Hitchcock Coit to honor the city she loved. The view from the top, on a clear day, spans the city’s waterfront and Alcatraz beyond. The murals inside the tower are excellent examples of 1930s WPA-era artwork.

Golden Gate Bridge - Whether you drive or walk across, you can’t help but be impressed by this 1.7-mile long suspension bridge.

Chinatown - The winding streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown district are worlds away from the posh Union Square nearby. Here Mandarin is the primary language, dim sum is served mid-morning, and the sounds and smells evoke the Chinese mainland. It’s a fascinating place for an afternoon stroll.

Golden Gate Park - The 1017-acre Golden Gate Park, located west of the city center, is San Francisco’s playground. It houses a historic windwill, a reflecting pond, and an art studio, among other attractions. The park also hosts a full schedule of concerts, many of them free.
