Memphis, located in eastern Tennessee along the Mississippi River, is home to Elvis and the Blues. It’s also filled with historic buildings, art galleries and a surprising number of free attractions. Below is a sampling.

The Art Museum at the University of Memphis - This museum located just east of downtown on the campus of the University of Memphis, features a regular schedule of diverse temporary exhibits as well as a permanent collection of African art, Egyptian antiquities and paper art. The museum is free to all.

The Peabody Ducks - I know it sounds odd, but every day at 1 1am, the mascots of the landmark Peabody Hotel, a gaggle of Mallard ducks, make their way from the roof of the hotel to the fountain in front of the building accompanied by fanfare and a red carpet. At 4 pm, the ceremony is reversed as the ducks go “home” for the evening.

South Main Historic District - Located in the south end of downtown Memphis, this interesting neighborhood is filled with art galleries, quirky boutiques and a variety of restaurants. It’s a fun place to take an afternoon stroll–and there’s no charge for window-shopping.
