The Staten Island Ferry, which connects lower Manhattan with the borough of Staten Island, is one of the best free things to do in New York City. The ferry makes its 5.2-mile, 25-minute run from Manhattan’s Whitehall Ferry Terminal to Staten Island’s St. George Terminal 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
The view
The best thing about the Staten Island Ferry is the excellent view of the lower Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. Sit on the upper deck, on the New Jersey side, for the best view.
On board
The ferry allows riders to take bikes, but cars have not been allowed since 9/11. There is a concession area on the ferry that sells snacks, sandwiches, and beer.
On Staten Island
You must exit the ferry at Staten Island, even if you are going to return to Manhattan right away. While there, take an hour to explore the Staten Island Museum, which covers Staten Island’s history from the days of the Lenape Native American tribe to the present.
