New York’s Long Island was rather late discovering that the temperate seaside climate and rich soil there work together to provide an excellent growing environment for wine grapes.
The first Long Island winery was formed in 1973, over a century after the wine industry began in California. However, the region has made up for lost time. Today, there are 76 wineries and over 4000 acres of vineyards. There are three distinct wine-growing regions on Long Island, each with their own appellation: North Fork of Long Island, The Hamptons, and Long Island.
