Few, if any, places in the world are as exciting on New Year’s Eve as New York City. The city’s festive holiday season is followed by an expectant air of anticipation as the new year approaches. The most popular event is the Waterford ball dropping at Times Square, but that’s far from the only event in town on December 31. Below are just a few of the other ways to ring in 2008 in New York:

New York Philharmonic - “The Romantic Violin.” See violinist Joshua Bell and the New York Philharmonic perform selections by Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens, and Ravel, ending with Ravel’s “Bolero.” The performance begins at 8pm at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. Tickets are $82 to $235.

New Year’s Eve Midnight Run. Join fellow runners and revelers in the annual New Year’s Eve four-mile run through Central Park. In addition to the run, there will be Champagne, a DJ and dancing, and snacks. The party starts at 10pm, with the run at midnight.

New Year’s Eve Harbor Cruise. Sail the night away abroad the Amberjack V around New York Harbor. The ship departs Pier 59 at 930pm and returns at 2am. The package includes an open bar, a buffet dinner, dancing and a DJ, party favors, and a Champagne toast for $185 per person.
