If you’re looking for a different kind of vacation, try volunteering. Habitat for Humanity offers vacationers a host of options.
- R-V Care-A-Vanners is a special program for recreational vehicle owners.
RV Care-A-Vanner builds normally involve eight to 20 RVing volunteers and last two weeks, with ten six-hour to seven-hour workdays. A typical day begins with devotions and includes morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Volunteers bring sturdy work shoes and gloves, and their personal hand tools—tool belt, hammer, square, pencil, measuring tape. The affiliate provides everything else including power tools, ladders, building materials, instruction and supervision. A volunteer leader handles the organization and administration of the team.
- The Gulf Recovery Effort concentrates on helping victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and Mississippi. Two years on, there’s still plenty of work to do.
- The Global Village Program helps families abroad. The program currently plans trips to Romania and Bolivia.
Volunteering is not free. You must pay for the costs of your trip, generally about $1,000 for a one-week trip, but the costs are tax deductible. For more information on a volunteer vacation, including the process for groups of 15 or more, visit www.habitat.org.
