Traveling in a group can be rewarding. You have people of similar interests with whom to share your discoveries and adventures and you have the security that comes with traveling in numbers.

However, there are also limits associated with group travel. You can’t run off the bus when you see a great pair of shoes in a shop window or decide to sleep in late without telling the group leader. To make the most of a group tour, consider the following:

  • Respect your fellow group members. This is just basic courtesy. Don’t make your fellow travelers wait while you redo your hair for the third time or enjoy that extra glass of wine long after you were supposed to be back on the bus.
  • Respect the culture of the place you are visiting. This, too, should go without saying. Don’t be the loudest, the most visible, the most brash visitor in sight. Take the time to learn a few words of the local language and some of their customs. In addition to being polite, such efforts are sure to enhance your enjoyment of the trip.
  • Remember: your group leader is human, too. Group leaders often seem like to first person to turn to when anything goes awry. However, you are better advised to call the hotel front desk at 2am if your sink is dripping than than the group leader. Equally, be understanding in the morning that if your leader is a little cranky. He or she may have gotten that call in the wee hours.
  • Stay with the group. Your group leader has a lot of people to keep track of. He can’t be telling you about the sights if he’s constantly looking for stragglers.
