I want to add a “dun, dun, dun” to this article title. Can’t you just hear the horror music chime in at the thought of traveling with the kids!

The last thing you want on a trip – especially on a road trip with the kids in the backseat.

Time flies when you’re having fun on a group road trip, but when the kids get restless – you better have some ASA in the glove box. Bored kids can make a long family car trip a lot longer, if you know what I mean, but if you plan ahead you can keep the kids happy and entertained for the entire car or plane ride.

The journey can be almost as fun as the vacation itself, if you bring the following activities along on your road trip:

Road trip journals – for all of your budding Jack Kerouac’s in the family! Get each kid a small pocket diary and provide pens and pencil crayons, so they can record trip experiences and sketch out their journey.

Let the kids navigate – Well not really, or else you might end up in
Timbuktu rather than the Detroit Zoo, but if you give the kids a copy of the route you’re following they can have some fun by following along. Try this activity on for size: Purchase one map per child in your car and stop along the way to pick up a souvenir from each stop. Souvenirs can be as simple as a flower, blade of grass, rock or instant photo. Have some glue handy so the kids can paste their souvenirs right onto their maps. Voila is a scrapbook map!

Magnetic games – These were always a hit with my brother and I when we were kids.

Magnetic checkers, tick-tac-toe and chess kept us occupied for hour-long road trips…well when we weren’t beating on each other – lol!
