Overseas vacation-planning checklist

Planning a vacation is complicated enough, but when you add an ocean, a few time zones, and a foreign language into the mix, it can all get a bit overwhelming. But the truth is, it’s worth the extra effort. Following are some tips to make it easier.

  • Buy a guide book: There are so many travel books on the market today, it’s hard to choose which one is best for you. Read a few reviews before making your decision. Websites like Amazon feature reader reviews that can be helpful. Also, some Amazon books have a”Search Inside” feature that allows you to view the Table of Contents, Index, and excerpts. After checking out a few titles online, head to your nearest bookstore, list in hand, to check them out in person. Guidebooks often have very different focuses, such as family, budget or luxury travel. Physically looking at the book will tell you if it meets your needs.
  • Get a phrase book: It’s true that no matter where you are, you’re likely to be able to find someone who speaks English, but you’ll be surprised at the smile on a person’s face when you address him in his own language. Plus, there’s always the chance that you’ll find yourself in a situation where you can’t find a translator. As the Boy Scouts say: “Be prepared.”
  • Make reservations in advance: There’s nothing like last-minute booking to really elevate your stress levels. You should buy your plane tickets, make your hotel reservations, and confirm your rental vehicle three months in advance, if possible. Planning so far in advance may also net you some great deals as you’ll have the luxury of waiting to take advantage of discount codes, coupons and specials that come your way.
  • Double up on all your important documents: After you’ve made sure that your credit cards are current, your passport is valid, and your ATM card will work overseas, make copies of everything. Yyour life will be exponentially easier if you have photocopies on hand if your things are lost or stolen.
  • Peruse online forums: Some of the best travel advice you can get is from other travelers, so search the Internet to find forums and chat boards dedicated to your vacation destination. You’ll find all sorts of tips, secrets and great advice about where to go, what to see, where to eat, and how to find the best deals in town. Furthermore, you can ask questions of your own and get expert advice from seasoned visitors and residents.

As you plan your overseas vacation, remember to take breaks, breathe deeply, and remind yourself that vacations are all about having fun. When you get there, you’ll find that all your planning was be worth it.
