Getting a U.S. passport is a fairly simple and straightforward process. You should prepare in advance, though, because the passport isn’t going to be handed to you immediately; you’ll need to wait 6-8 weeks for it to arrive. To get your U.S. passport, you need to take the following steps:
- Get a passport application, also known as a DS-11. The easiest way to do this is to go online and download the application. Complete the application. leaving the signature blank.
- Make sure that you have your proof of U.S. citizenship. For most people, this means getting out their copy of their birth certificate. For others, it may be a certificate of citizenship or some other proof. If you don’t not have one of these documents, you will need to go through the proper steps to obtain it before you apply for a passport.
- Make sure you have proof of your identity. For most people, this is your driver’s license. State ID, military ID, previously issued passports and certain other forms of picture ID are acceptable. Non-picture ID (such as a social security card) is not valid. If you do not have proof of identity, you will need to obtain it before you apply for a passport.
- Get your passport photos taken. In some cases, this can be done right on site when you apply for your passport. For example, many people apply for their passport at a branch of the United States Post Office which usually has someone on site to take the photographs. If not, you can get the photos done at various places locally including such places as travel agent offices. Make sure your photos meet the specifications for the application if you are getting them done in advance.
- Apply in person for your passport. This can be done at any number of locations including the local post office (see list of facilities here). Take your application, proof of citizenship, proof of identity and passport photos with you. You will agree to a sworn statement and sign your application form in the presence of an agent. At this time, you will pay a fee for your passport.
- Wait for your passport to arrive via mail. This normally takes 6-8 weeks. There are methods of getting an expedited passport should you need one.
