So you’ve got your family packed into a minivan for a group day trip. Your little ones are tired of watching the portable DVD player, and the batteries have run out on your teenagers gameboy. Grandma is sitting in the back trying to keep everyone amused. What you need right now are some road games like you used to play when you were a kid, here are some of our favorites.

Alphabet Game
Starting with the letter “A” the first person spots something that starts with that letter. Next person next letter, keep cycling through until you’ve done the entire alphabet. For longer car trips have everyone start with the letter “A”, then everyone does letter “B” and so on.

Last Letter
The first person picks the name of a town or something they see on the road like “Oklahoma”. The next person has to spot an object that begins with the last letter from the word. Oklahoma ends in “A” so the next person looks for something that starts with an “A” like apple or army truck.

License Plate Game 1
Get out a notepad and spot how many different state license plates you can find.

License Plate Game 2
Take the letter or numbers in a license plate and try to make them into single or combination of words. For example see KTN 896 you get KITCHEN 896. See VSG 547 get VERY SWEET GIRL 547. See REW 867 you get “Jenny 867-5309″ from Tommy Tutone.

Two Truths and a Lie
Each person takes turns they have to tell two true statements and one lie. The rest of the people in the car must try to figure out which is which.

Counting Cows
As pass by a farm each person counts the number of individual cows they see, at the end of the game the person with the most cows wins. To make it more difficult you can add in the the graveyard. The first person to spot a graveyard gets to reset any other players count back to zero.

Did You See
Give each person in the car one color car/truck/van to count. Jane gets yellow, John gets red, frank gets green and so on. Another variation is to play with types of cars, one person gets minivans another gets sports cars, someone gets convertibles and so on.

My friend taught me a great variation on the Alphabet Game - you have to find the letters written somewhere (on a street sign, advertising, etc). You can decide if car plates count or not. As with all those games it gets tricky down at X, Y, Z, but it’s doable.
